Early in my art practice I tended towards a more neutral color palette often informed by materials and the content expressed in my work. Over the past five years it has been refreshing to see new colors emerging in my practice, especially in Hutch and Tulips for Clemens. For me, the color is rooted in some personally very challenging times and is, in itself displaying hope.
The vibrant colors of a Nebraska sunrise are beautifully visible from the east facing entrance at the Calvin T. Ryan Library. A Kearney sunrise photo in the introduction section at cumulate.art inspired me and I explored the array of color with swatches and swatches of paint to find the right mix that would give a nod to colors so fleeting and beautiful. These colors have helped determine the flow of curated Nebraska poetry, and the sculptural clouds. Each of the nine poets, curated by Matt Mason, Nebraska’s State Poet, are represented by one of these colors!
